The 2022 Caribana Weekend is from Thursday, July 28 – Monday, August 1, 2022.

The previous name “Caribana” was created by mixing the words Canada and Caribbean

Caribana started in 1967 and has grown to be North America’s largest cultural festival. It is an important display of freedom and is a remembrance of African Emancipation Day.

Toronto’s Caribbean community organizes a kick-off parade called J’ouvert. Inspired by Trinidad’s carnival tradition, it places emphasis on rhythmic music and features steel pan bands and improvised instruments

Participants in the parade are organized into masquerade “bands”, and each expresses a particular theme, led by a “king” and “queen” who appear in the most lavish costumes. These bands compete with one another and are judged based on their costumes, energy and creativity

The musical genre heard most at Caribana, is Soca. This genre originated in Trinidad & Tobago in the 1970s and is a natural evolution from Calypso music. Soca stands for “soul of calypso”.
