IBS is a frustrating condition that greatly reduces quality of life.¹ Symptoms can include recurrent abdominal pain associated with changes in stool form or frequency. This condition impacts physical and mental wellbeing.² An estimated 18% of the Canadian population³ suffers from IBS.
Types of IBS:
- IBS-M: Mixed diarrhea and constipation
- IBS-D: Diarrhea predominant
- IBS-C: Constipation predominant
Symptoms of IBS can include:
- Recurrent abdominal pain
- Diarrhea, constipation, or both
- Changes in frequency of bowel movements ⁴
While the cause of IBS is unclear, advancements in the understanding of the gut-brain interaction continue to uncover more insights into this condition. People who suspect they have IBS should talk to their healthcare practitioner.
IBS is associated with diarrhea, constipation, or both. When the gut is struggling, it may not be digesting or absorbing nutrients well. Evidence found adults with IBS appear to have lower levels of vitamin B2, vitamin D, calcium, and iron than non-IBS adults.⁵ The clinical guidelines for the management of irritable bowel syndrome from the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology suggests a trial of low FODMAP diet, and the use of psyillium, but not wheat bran, to help reduce symptoms.⁶ Peppermint oil has been shown to help normalize intestinal transit times and thus help normalize the digestion and absorption of nutrients. ⁷
