Why do you use Palm Oil in Nestle products?

Palm oil is a cost-competitive, versatile and widely produced vegetable oil. When produced responsibly, it can support millions of livelihoods and reduce pressure on forests and sensitive ecosystems.

We use refined palm oil as an ingredient in a number of our food and beverage products.  We do so in strict accordance with, and often beyond, all relevant food safety regulations and laws, wherever we operate.

What is the Nestlé commitment to Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Certified Palm Oil?

We continue to increase our sourcing of RSPO – certified palm oil, with a preference for the physically segregated RSPO SG certification, working towards 100% RSPO certification by 2023.

Is your approach to sourcing Palm Oil sustainable and deforestation-free?

At Nestlé, we are opposed to the deforestation of rainforests and peatlands in all parts of the world and view the sourcing of palm oil as one of the most serious environmental issues we are facing today.

We have a comprehensive program in place to improve the sustainability of our palm oil supply chain. We work with our suppliers and partners to continuously improve the sustainability practices of our upstream supply chain for palm oil, including assessing and addressing deforestation risks.

What progress has Nestle made towards sustainable palm oil production?

To address sustainability challenges in our palm oil supply chains, we start by understanding where the palm oil comes from and how it is produced. Below are a few highlights on some of our progress made:

  • In 2021, globally 97% of our supply of palm oil is traceable to mills.
  • In Canada, we are 100% traceable to the plantation since 2020.
  • In 2021, 90.4% of palm oil assessed as deforestation-free.
  • In 2021, 423 Kilotonnes of palm oil assessed as deforestation-free
