The Difference between Nestlé Ice Cream and Frozen Desserts

Monday, July 08, 2024

When it comes to icy desserts, there’s a lot to choose from in the freezer aisle for that perfectly indulgent and refreshing treat. Have you ever wondered why some products are labelled as “ice cream” and others “frozen dessert”? What’s the difference between ice cream and frozen dessert?

At Nestlé, we offer a delicious variety of both treats that are equally delicious and equally refreshing to enjoy. In this article, let's uncover the nuances that set ice cream and frozen dessert apart for the next time you’re shopping for a frozen indulgence.

What’s the difference between ice cream and frozen desserts?

The main difference between ice cream and frozen dessert is their source of fat.

Ice cream:

  • The fat comes from cream.
  • Ice cream must contain at least 10% milk fat.

Nestlé frozen desserts:

  • Vegetable oil is used as the source of fat.
  • Contrary to popular belief, frozen desserts do contain dairy! The only difference with the dairy in frozen desserts is that the fat component is removed from the milk.

Why does Nestlé offer both frozen desserts and ice cream?

The decision between ice creams and frozen desserts depends on a number of factors such as taste preference, calories, and fat content, to name a few. It’s important for us to offer our consumers a full range of products to choose from to cater to diverse choices and preferences.

For example, ice cream has a higher dairy ingredient composition, along with sugar and flavourings, providing the classic, creamy experience. Frozen desserts encompass a broader category that can accommodate both dairy and plant-based options. With lower milk fat content and plant-based alternatives, our frozen desserts ensure that our consumers with dietary restrictions or plant-based lifestyles can also enjoy an indulgent frozen treat.

This is why we continue to innovate and offer a wide array of both ice cream and frozen dessert selections within your favourite brands for you to choose from. Discover our full range:

On the other hand, frozen desserts provide an exciting range of indulgent options, accommodating various dietary preferences and restrictions. Whether you crave ice cream or frozen desserts, both have their own unique appeal and both are perfect to enjoy on a hot day!
