At Nestlé Canada, we know gluten is increasingly being asked about and we always strive to meet the needs of our diverse fan base.
According to Canadian labelling regulations, gluten sources must be declared on any prepackaged food that contains gluten protein, modified gluten protein, or gluten protein fractions. The sources of gluten must be declared by the grain name in the ingredient list or in the “May Contain” statement (if there is any chance of cross-contamination) on a product label.
What are the sources of Gluten?
There are 5 main sources of gluten:
- Barley
- Oats
- Rye
- Triticale
- Wheat
Always be sure to check the label. If the product contains a source of gluten, it will be declared in the ingredient list or if there is a risk of cross-contamination, in the “May Contain” statement that follows the list of ingredients.

If the product does not have the Gluten-Free logo, is it safe to consume or does it contain gluten?
To enjoy a product without worry we recommend that you always verify the product label for allergen warnings. If it contains any sources of gluten, it will be listed. The label on the package is the most up to date, and we strongly encourage consumers with any dietary needs or restrictions to look at the ingredients at the store prior to making any purchase or before consumption.
Only specific products will have the “Gluten-Free” logo, as we have multiple manufacturing locations. If your product does not show the logo on the packaging, it may not meet requirements for claiming to be, “gluten-free”.
We follow the regulations by Health Canada and guidance from the CFIA. At Nestlé, the sources of gluten are declared by the grain name in the ingredient list or if there is a risk of cross-contamination, in the “May Contain” statement of the product label.
When is the “Gluten Free” claim made?
A “gluten-free” claim is made for a product when it is specially processed or formulated to meet the needs of individuals that need to follow a gluten-free diet.
How to report a reaction?
If you think that you or a family member has had a reaction or injury that might be associated with having eaten a gluten-free labeled food product, discuss this with your healthcare provider. We take the safety of our consumers very serious, and we want to hear from you. Keep the packaging and share as many product details with us as possible.
